What Are Permalinks?
Permalinks are the permanent URLs for your posts and pages. WordPress supports several formats, and the right choice affects both usability and SEO.
Recommended Permalink Structure
The Post Name structure (/%postname%/) is best for SEO. It creates clean, readable URLs like yourdomain.com/how-to-install-wordpress/.
Changing Permalink Settings
- Log in to WordPress Admin.
- Go to Settings → Permalinks.
- Select Post Name.
- Click Save Changes.
Fixing 404 Errors After Changing Permalinks
If pages show a 404 error after changing permalinks, the .htaccess file may need to be regenerated:
- Go to Settings → Permalinks and click Save Changes again (even without making a change). This regenerates the
.htaccessfile. - If that does not work, check that your
public_html/.htaccessfile is writable (permissions 644).
